The Indian Wells Masters (BNP Paribas Open) is one of the most important tournaments after the 4 Grand Slams of the ATP and the WTA and is the fifth tennis event with the most attendance in the world.

The event has always been held in March in a small city of Indian Wells, California, US. Originally the tournament was held separated between the women and men, and usually the women’s tournament was a week before the men’s tourney.  Although in 1996, the event became a merged championship and is a one of the few tournaments unified between the WTA and the ATP.

The event has become in recent times one of the biggest tournaments on both tours, having the participation of 96 professional tennis players in each category.

The men’s event has been called with seven different names over the years; the first one was American Airlines Tennis Games during 1974 to 1978 and the last one was the Pacific Life Open which was imposed from 2002 to 2008. Likewise, the women’s event had also seven names over the years, the first one was the Virginia Slims of Indian Wells from 1989-1990 and the last one was the same as the men’s event, Pacific Life Open, from 2002-2008. This year 2009, the tournament was renamed by the organizers as the BNP Paribas Open in both categories due to the sponsorship.

The defending champions for the next 2009 event are Novak Djokovic  and Ana Ivanovic whereas for doubles, the defending champions in men’s are Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, and in women’s Dinara Safina and Elena Vesnina.
