Robin Söderling

Robin Soderling is a Swedish tennis player who has been playing since he was five years-old. In 1998 he participated in his first official international junior tournament. In 2000, his first year on the pro tour, he achieved four triumphs. In 2001 he won three more titles, including the Orange Bowl Tennis tournament.

At the end of 2001, Soderling played and won his first ATP title in Stockholm, this accomplishment made him fourth in the junior rankings.

2002

Soderling participated in five tournaments on the ATP circuit, reached the second round of the U.S. Open and also made it to the second round in the Challenger circuit. He reached the final of the U.S. Open juniors’ tournament.

2003

Many tennis fans were shocked when he reached the third round at Wimbledon. Then he advanced to the final game in Stockholm, where he lost to Mardy Fish 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (4). His strong performance served him to enter the ATP rankings as world No.86.

2004

He took some big steps in his career after winning his first ATP title at Lyon. He also reached the final match at the Marseille tournament, where he beat Dominik Hrbaty. These good results gave them the opportunity to get to the top 50 of the world rankings.

2005

This was not a good year for the Swedish. A knee injury prevented him from having a good season. Although he participated in several tournaments and won a title in Milan, he failed to excel in his other tournaments. In the U.S. Open he just reached the third round.

2006

After his poor performance during the previous year that left him at world No.100 in the ATP ranking, Soderling recovers and ascended to the top 50 after reaching the final in the tournament of Memphis and then helping the Swedish team have a good performance against Brazil in the play-offs of the Davis Cup. He kept with an irregular season in the ATP tour, not achieving any significant triumph. The most remarkable thing he did was to climb to the 25th place of the rankings before the end of the season.

2007

Soderling managed to recover from his injuries. He was able to reach the round of 32 at Wimbledon, where Rafael Nadal beat him in an intense five-set match, which lasted five days due to the bad weather.

From that moment, began a notable rivalry between these two tennis players. Soderling constantly mocked Nadal during the game. Although he managed to improve his game for the first time in a season, he failed to reach an ATP final. He had to call his season short due to an injury on his left wrist.

2008

The same injury that sidelined him the previous season also affected him during the start of 2008.  He was unable to participate in the Australia Open.

Upon recovery, Soderling collaborated with the triumph of the Swedish team in the Davis Cup, after winning all four singles matches and its four doubles matches. In the Roland Garros he advanced to the third round and in Wimbledon he failed to pass the round of the 64 after losing against Roger Federer.

After his poor performance in the Beijing Olympic Games and the U.S. Open, Soderling decided to change coaches. His new coach would be the former world No.2 Magnus Norman. This was a good decision, because with the help of Norman, Robin Soderling was able to reach the final of the tournament in Stockholm, where he lost in a complicated match against David Nalbandian.

Later he broke with losing streak by winning in the Lyon tournament, where he beat the local Julien Benneteau 6-3, 6-7 and 6-1. These achievements helped him climb up to 17th place in the ATP.

2009

This year he achieved the sixteen seed in the Australian Open, but Marcos Baghdatis eliminated him in the second round. In the Madrid Masters he fell in the third round against Roger Federer.

In the Roland Garros he achieved an excellent winning streak that led him to the grand finale. On his way there he took away the unbeaten 31 undefeated-match-streak of Rafael Nadal by beating him in the semifinals. However, Soderling found himself against Federer, and he took away what might had been the best performance in his carreer. With this runner-up position in this final, Soderling reached the12th place of the world rankings.

At Wimbledon, he again met Roger Federer. The Swiss cut his way into the fourth round. In the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, for the fourth time in the season, Federer left him behind. Soderling achieved his first title of year in the Bastad tournament, which ascend him to the eleventh place of the ranking. He ended the year as the world No.8, the best position he has achieved so far in his career.

2010

Due to a discomfort in his elbow that affected him last season, Soderling could not make it pass the first round of the Australia Open. In the Sony Ericsson Open, Robin Soderling advanced firmly to the semifinals. There he lost against Tomas Berdych with a double 6-2
