Samantha Stosur

Samantha Stosur is an Australian tennis player, who started playing at a very young age, encouraged by her older brother.

Stosur had her first major participation when she was 13 years old at the World Youth Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. A year later she entered the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS). Then, in 2001, she joined the tennis program of the Australian Institute of Sport.

Samantha Stosur is a skilled player. Her best weapon is the two-handed backhand. Stosur began her professional career in 1999 at the ITF circuit. The following year she made her debut in the WTA, in the Australian Open, where she was eliminated in the first round.

In 2001, she won four consecutive titles in the ITF. In 2003, she reached the third round of the Australia Open.

In 2004, she reached the semifinals of the Brisbane International as well as the second round of the Australian Open. That same year she qualified for the WTA event in Acapulco, Indian Wells, Vienna and Birmingham. She competed in the Olympics games in Athens, where she was eliminated in the first round. At the end of the year, Stosur won the doubles title at the Bell Challenge, in Canada, paired up with Els Callens.

2005

2005 was a very good year for Stosur. At the end of the season she won seven WTA titles in the doubles category, including the U.S. Open, the Kremlin Cup and the WTA Tour Championships. Samantha finished the year as world No.46 in singles and world No.2 in doubles.

2006

In the 2006 Australian Open, Stosur reached the fourth round in singles, while in doubles she finished as the title’s runner-up with Lisa Raymond.

Keeping on with her success, Stosur and Raymond won titles in doubles at Tokyo, Memphis, Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, the French Open and the WTA Tour Championships.

Stosur ended the year with another doubles title, this time on the WTA Tour Championships in Madrid. These good performances ranked her as world No. 1 in doubles and world No.29 in singles.

2007

In 2007, Stosur and Raymond defended together the doubles titles in Tokyo, Indian Wells and Miami. They also won the 2007 German Open.

Later that same year, Samantha reached the quarter-finals of the Gold Coast, Tokyo and Memphis tournaments. In the 2007 Internazionali BNL d'Italia she advanced to the third round.

She could not continue her run in the French Open as she was diagnosed with the Lyme disease. This condition caused her competitive level to decrease considerably. She was out of Wimbledon during the second round and was eliminated of the U.S. Open in the first round. Her bad health forced her to withdraw from several tournaments in the United States.

After the U.S. Open, Stosur did not compete during the rest of the year.

2008

Stosur returned to the professional circuit in two ITF tournaments. Then, she participated in the Rome Masters, where she was eliminated in the second round in hands of Venus Williams. In that same tournament she paired up with Lisa Raymond and reached the second round in doubles.

In the French Open, these two good players reached the third round, meanwhile, in singles, Stosur was eliminated in the second round.

At Wimbledon, Stosur reached the second round in singles. In doubles, again with Raymond, they were the title’s runners-up and in mixed doubles she obtained the victory with teammate Bob Bryan.

In the Olympic Games in Beijing, Stosur reached the second round, both in singles and doubles.

In the U.S. Open she was left out in the first round of singles; in doubles she reached the second round and in mixed doubles she finished as the title’s runner-up.

At the end of the year, Samantha Stosur climbed 110 positions until she was placed as world No.52 in the WTA rankings.

2009

In the 2009 Australian Open, Stosur did not pass the first round after losing 7-6 (6), 6-4 against Elena Dementieva.

In the French Open, she reached the first Grand Slam semifinal of her career. In doubles, she reached the third round. This result placed Samantha Stosur in the top 20 of the WTA.

In Wimbledon she did not excel in singles after been eliminated in the third round. That didn’t stop her though. She went on and paired with Rennea Stubbs and claimed the second place in the doubles tournament.

In the U.S. Open, she reached the semifinals before being eliminated by Marion Bartoli. In the LA Women's Tennis Championships, she ended as the runner-up. This was her fifth final on the WTA Tour. Then, in the Rogers Cup, she ended as runner-up in doubles with Stubbs.

2010

In the 2010 Australian Open, Samantha Stosur reached the quarterfinals. In the Fed Cup, she was a key player in Australia’s (3-2) victory over Spain.
