The second best Swiss tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka began playing tennis when he was only 8 years of age to later on moved into the junior circuits by the age of 14. Wawrinka is quite known for his junior achievements as he won the 2003 French Open Junior title. By 2005 he was already within the top 50 in the senior circuit in the ATP. In 2006 he got to the 29th position his highest ranking up to that point in his professional career.

In 2007 Wawrinka reached the 3rd round at the Australian Open and the second round at the French Open. Nevertheless, he managed the fourth round at the US Open, his best ever in a Grand Slam competition. That same year he reached the Mercedes Cup final but was beaten by the Spaniard Rafa Nadal.

During the 2008 season, Wawrinka broke into the top 10 ranking as he played the finals of the Rome Masters Series against Novak Djokovic. Additionally, he participated along side with Roger Federer in the doubles competition at the Olympics in Beijing and they won the gold medal. And within a week Wawrinka was playing at the US Open where he reached the fourth round, but was defeated by future runner up the Scottish Andy Murray.
