Svetlana Kuznetsova
Svetlana Kuznetsova is a Russian tennis player, who started her professional career in 2000. Svetlana has adapted very well to different types of playing surfaces. Her strong services and her powerful right arm characterize her play.
Svetlana began her career in the tournaments of the ITF circuit in 2000. Her first title in that circuit was obtained in 2001. Her first participations in the WTA tournaments happened in the Madrid Open and the Waikoloa Championships, where she was eliminated in the second round.
In 2002, she made her first debut in a Grand Slam, the Australian Open, but she did not exceed the second round. She did not participate in Wimbledon or in the French Open due to the fact that she was eliminated during the qualifying rounds.
Svetlana Kuznetsova won her first WTA title at the Nordea Nordic Light Open after defeating Denisa Chladkova in the final. With this result, she entered the top 100. In the U.S. Open she reached the third round, where Silvia Farina Elia beat her.
In the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic, she won her second title on hard surface. She also won her first doubles title with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. She finished the season in 43rd place
In the 2003 Australian Open, Venus Williams eliminated her during the first round. At Wimbledon, Justine Henin beat her in the quarterfinals. In the U.S. Open Kim Clijsters left her out in the third round. Kuznetsova finished the season as world No. 36.
In 2004, she reached the third round of the Australian Open, where again, Henin eliminated her. In the Fed Cup, she won the singles and doubles title. In Wimbledon she didn’t have too much luck after falling in the first round to Virginie Razzano.
Her first Grand Slam title was achieved in the U.S. Open final after defeating Elena Dementieva 6-3, 7-5. She finished the year in fifth place of the WTA.
Svetlana was eliminated by Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open of 2005 during the quarterfinals. With Alicia Molik she won the doubles title of this tournament.
In Wimbledon she was also eliminated in the quarterfinals, but won the doubles with Amelie Mauresmo. She could not defend her title at the U.S. Open, as she lost to Ekaterina Bychkova in the first round of the competition. This bad result left her out of the top 10, ending in eighteenth place of the rankings.
During the fourth round of the 2006 Australian Open, Svetlana was beaten by Lindsay Davenport. Then, in the NASDAQ-100 Open, she defeated Maria Sharapova to obtain her first Tier I title of her career and her first victory in 18 months.
In Wimbledon and in the U.S. Open she was eliminated in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. She ended the year in fourth place of the WTA.
In 2007, Svetlana was again removed from the Australia Open during the fourth round. In Wimbledon, she got to the quarterfinals for third time in her career but was beaten by Venus Williams, who eventually won the tournament.
Kuznetsova did a good job in the 2007 U.S. Open. She was awarded the runner-up position since she was beaten by Henin in the final. This result placed her in the second place of the WTA rankings. In the Fed Cup, the Kuznetsova was an essential part of Russia’s take over Italy.
Svetlana began the 2008 season with high expectations, but surprisingly she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round of the Australian Open. At Wimbledon, the same player eliminated the Russian player in the fourth round.
In the Beijing Olympics, she was eliminated in the first round of this tennis event. While in the U.S. Open she just reached the third round. She again gave the victory to Russia in the Fed Cup after defeating Italy. She finished in eighth place of the world rankings without winning any single title during the year.
Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the quarter-finals in the 2009 Australian Open but was defeated by Serena Williams. She was eliminated from Wimbledon by Sabine Lisicki in the third round.
In the U.S. Open, she reached the fourth round, where Caroline Wozniacki finished her run.
The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the French Open and the China Open were her only three titles in 2009.
She started the 2010 with her elimination in the fourth round of Australian Open by Nadia Petrova. In the Fed Cup, she didn’t won in singles but she did in doubles with Alisa Kleybanova.
