Victoria Azarenka
Victoria Azarenka is a professional tennis player from Belarus. She is renowned for her powerful right hand shots and her potent two-handed backhand. These characteristics have made her one of the strongest active female tennis players.
Azarenka started her professional career in 2003. It was not until 2005 that she managed to excel after winning the Australian Open and the U.S. Open in the junior category. After such great victories she was named ITF World Junior Girls Champion of the year.
2006
In 2006 Azarenka defeated several players ranked among the top 30. In Roland Garros she did not pass the first round, while in the U.S. Open she reached the third round: her best result at a Grand Slam until that moment. She finished the year as the runner-up for the ITF Championship.
2007
In the 2007 Australian Open, Victoria Azarenka reached for the second straight year the third round of a Grand Slam. She could not continue as Jelena Jankovic eliminated her.
In the French Open she reached the first round while at Wimbledon she was out in the third round after losing against Nicole Vaidisova. In the U.S. Open she reached the fourth round in singles, while in mixed doubles she won the title paired up with Max Mirnyi.
2008
She plays the Australian Open with an injured leg. During the early rounds she competed without showing any signs of pain but during the third round she could not beat the defending champion Serena Williams.
In the French Open she won the mixed doubles title with Bob Bryan. In singles she reached the fourth round.
At both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, she didn’t make it pass the third round.
2009
In the Australian Open, Serena Williams again eliminated Azarenka from the tournament, this time in the fourth round. In Roland Garros she managed to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her professional carreer. She was defeated 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 by Dinara Safina. In doubles she paired up with Elena Vesnina and manages their way up to the final match where they were defeated.
At Wimbledon she failed to surpass the quarterfinals after losing against Serena Williams. In the U. S. Open she reached the third round. She also won the Sony Ericsson Open tournament.
2010
In the 2010 Australian Open Azarenka reached the quarter-finals. She could not continue since Serena Williams defeated her. In the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships she was the runner-up after been defeated in the final 6-3, 7-5 by defending champion Venus Williams.
In the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open, she lost her title to Kim Clijsters in the fourth round. Clijsters was the eventual champion.
