Winter Sports - Ski Jumping
History - World Cup Winners
Ski jumping originates in Morgedal, Norway, but the first proper competition was held in Trysil in 1862. In 1879 the first known ski jumping competition took place in Husebybakken, Oslo.
Holmenkollen is considered the Mecca of ski jumping. Ski jumping is predominantly a winter sport, performed on snow, and is part of the Winter Olympic Games, but can also be performed in summer on artificial surfaces
As of the 2006 Winter Olympics, only men compete in this sport, though a petition to include women has been sent from the FIS to the IOC for inclusion in the 2010 Winter Olympics. This petition was rejected by the IOC on November 29, 2006 though women's ski jumping will be included in the 2009 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic
