Bruno Senna Disappointed About the Refusal in the Formula One
By Emeli Dean
The 25-year-old Brazilian racecar driver Bruno Senna is the nephew of the triple Formula One world champion and icon of this sport, Ayrton Senna, who died at his only 24 years-old at the Grand Prix in San Marino in 1994 at the Imola circuit. In opposition to most of the automobile racers, Bruno Senna did start his career without any experience in the cart sport. The reason for this fact is that he never told his mom about his dream to participate in this sport since she had already lost two very important people in her life due to accidents. In 1994 Bruno’s famous uncle died in a car race and just 2 years later his dad had a lethal motorcycle accident as well. However, at the age of 20, Bruno finally took his chance to make his dream come true.
Thanks to private training units with his uncle in his childhood, Bruno could go for a spin in England and prove his talent in the Formula Three. In 2004 he participated for the first time in the British Formula Three and could assure himself a place on the podium just two years later. For the 2007 season Senna switched to the category of the Gp2 Series which stands one stage above the Formula Three and is considered to be the preliminary stage to the Formula One.
In the last season which took part from April to September 2008, Bruno Senna achieved the title to the runners-up of the GP2 Series and hoped that he would get the chance to get into the Formula One after completing several test drives for the former Team Honda Racing.
After the team announced at the end of 2008 that they will retire completely from the Formula One for financial reasons, Senna’s dream seemed to burst like a bubble. However, some staff members of the team, amongst others the team chef Ross Brawn and general director Nick Fry, decided to save the team’s existence by bringing in equity capital. But even though the team was still on the track looking for another name, they decided not to hire the new comer and contracted instead their oldie and Bruno’s countryman Rubens Barrichello, who had started for the Honda team since two years now.
Bruno Senna is now visibly disappointed but he doesn’t give up his hope. “I am a little angry. This issue dragged on for such a long time that I have lost other options. It is important to keep the Formula One as priority. I need to see that I can stay as close as possible to the manufacturer that is also represented in the Formula One. The aim is to build good connections to the Formula One program of a concern.”
Maybe the Brazilian will have a little luck, because it is being discussed the possibility for the 25-year-old to drive alongside the German Ralf Schumacher in the DTM Series for the Team Mercedes. Mercedes sports chef Norbert Haug confirmed that they are considering this option but they have not finalized. “It would be certainly nice to have Bruno Senna in the DTM. If this will happen at this moment is just a speculation. There are conversations but no decisions.”
