Big Brown: a Belmont Disappointment

By Audrey Nolan

After the race at the Belmont stakes, Big Brown was the one everyone thought had won the Triple Crown all-jewels but this was not the case as the horse finished in a disappointing last place.

The horse’s trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. was absent after the race and left a lot of questions without an answer regarding what happened to Big Brown at 1 1/2 mile in Belmont, where the favorite was beaten by 8 other horses. Big Brown faced the cameras all by himself except for exercise rider Michelle Nevin who stood by his side.

Co-owner Michael Lavarone said Big Brown had a complete examination after the race and again Sunday morning. "There's nothing physically that's shown up," he said, speaking by cell phone from his daughter's soccer game in Long Island. "I'm as confused as anybody. The only thing we're resorting to right now is the track might have been too deep for him and he didn't like it out there."

As per the obvious results Big Brown will be submitted to more exhaustive tests, for example, blood tests and X rays to try to find a clue to what went on which led to his poor performance.

Dutrow was criticized after acknowledging he used an anabolic steroid on Big Brown, then said last week the horse hadn't had a dose of Winstrol since April. This drug is known to increase appetite and promote weight gain and healing. The drug is legal in the three states where the Triple Crown races are run.

According to the veterinarian Larry Bramlage the drug that was administrated to Big Brown keeps him eating and keeps him happy as well as aggressive for competition which he showed all week long.

Big Brown was running with a quarter crack in his left front hoof that wasn't patched until Friday, but Dutrow insisted all last week that it was a non-issue injury.

The colt was not in its best shape despite the hard training but the previously mentioned injury took three days of his already arranged schedule which could have cost him the victory at the Belmont Stakes.

Lavarone said that unless something shows up, Big Brown will maintain his training schedule and be pointed toward the Travers Stakes in August at Saratoga.Like everybody else, his rival trainer Nick Zito also noticed that Big Brown was not on his best shape.

"He wasn't making his move," said Zito, who saddled 38-1 long shot Da' Tara to a 5 1/4-length upset. "Specially the way Ricky talks, I knew I was in pretty good shape." "I saw why he said that in the Derby and the Preakness Stakes," Zito said. "He knew he had something on his hands that was really tremendous."

No doubt Big Brown is worth millions to Lavarone and his other two owners. They've already locked up an estimated $50 million deal for his breeding rights with Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky.

As for the horse is concern the colt will return to his regular training life and there are high chances we will see Big Brown win big again quite soon.
