Soccer - Manchester United Intercontinental Champions for Second Time

By Audrey Nolan

Manchester United may have lost a player for the Champions League match against the Inter Milan, but they have won the Club World Cup against the LDU Quito last Thursday in the Yokohama International Stadium. This is the first time that an English club wins the Cup with their new expanded form, for they did won the old one once in 1999 against the Palmeiras Club.

The Ecuador team made an effort to win the game but the English team was superior in a lot of ways; they were dominant through the entire tournament and they deserved the victory. The first five minutes of the games were very important for each of the teams to put the game in the table, but it was not until minute 66 when Wayne Rooney completed the move after a final pass from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wayne Rooney was the key player on the game; he scored the goal for the victory but his team also had to face the dismissal of Nemanja Vidic from the game for elbowing Claudio Bieler in the second half of the game. He was banned automatically with one game suspension according to the FIFA rules, they will ratify the punishment later but normally it is from one to three games suspension. This will leave him out of the Champions League tie against the Inter and if they win, possibly the first part of the quarter finals.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who is the Manchester United Manager, said referring to Wayne Rooney: “He won the man-of-the-match award and scored the goal. His positional play in the second half when I played him towards the left was fantastic. He was not just a threat, he defended for us. He did everything and was a real handful for them.”

He also expressed that for him Vidic did not use any intentional force against Claudio Bieler, but he also admitted that the referee didn’t have any choice but showing the red card to Vidic. Vidic was very surprised with the decision but Ferguson said that the move actually was for a red card. Right now they are just waiting for a decision from FIFA to see what the final suspension will be. They already know the it is going to be in the European Championship, but they still don’t know how many games.

The Manchester United has been having a very good drought, winning the 2007-08 Premier League title, 2007-08 Champions League and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. After a very low start in the Premier League after being in the 17th place they found themselves winning the title beating the Wigan Athletic in the finals.

This year was the third time that they where able to be in the Champions League final which they won after beating the Chelsea in penalties keeping the record of never have lost a final in an European Championship.

And to add another trophy in the club’s history they won the FIFA Club World Cup, hopping to have the same drought for next year.
