USA Open-The Williams Sisters Meet Again
By Ally White
The 28 and the 26 years-old female American tennis players, Venus and Serena Williams have faced each other once again at the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. The Williams sisters have played an amazing tennis since the very beginning of the tournament; and for both of them the goal has always remained to win the last Grand Slam of the season and step up in the rankings.
The possibility of the two sisters playing each other became closer and closer as on one side Serena kept overcoming rivals as; the Ukrainian Katerina Bondarenko in the first round, the Russian Elena Vesnina in the second, the Japanese Ai Sugiyama in the third, and in the fourth one the French Severine Bremond, all of them in only two sets for a fifth round match – the quarter finals against older sister Venus.
The Williams know each other’s game and they have worked very hard to be nowadays, amongst the legends of the sport. If we take a closer look to Venus’ games since the beginning of last week when she first played the Austrian Samantha Stosur whom she defeated by 2-6, 3-6 we saw tons of motivation, a precise game, and hard training. These were once again the key factors to win the games against Rossana De Los Rios in the second round and Alyona Bondarenko in the third. Venus’ greatest challenge was against the Polish Agnieszka Radwanska as in the first game Venus struggled with her serve but very quickly it came back to her and she was able to win it by 6-1, 6-3.
Both Venus and Serena have been crowned champions at Flushing Meadows. In two consecutive years 2000 and 2001 Venus won the US Open Grand Slam while her little sister Serena won her first one in 1999 and her last US Open in 2002. Over the years, that these two extraordinary tennis players have been in the senior circuit, their game and multiple wins have made the sport media called this “The Williams Era.”
It is also true that both players have been out from time to time due to injuries and health problems and they both have dropped their rankings, but despite the ups and downs they continue to amaze the sport world with their talents on the tennis courts. It is also important to mention that for the moment there is no other female American player who is currently in the path close to the Williams, there is only Lindsay Davenport who is amongst the top 25 best players and Bethanie Mattek who is between the top 45 in the WTA rankings.
Now, it is Serena’s time to proof herself and to keep up her serve and devastating ground strokes now that she has won the match against older sister Venus in a shocking game which concluded in two sets 7-6, 7-6. Serena has booked herself a place in the US Open Grand Slam semi finals and will next face the Russian Dinara Safina. The other two ladies who will be competing for the crown are Serbian Jelena Jankovic and Russian Elena Dementieva.
