Maria Sharapova…Can She Be One of the Greatest?
By Ally White
It is difficult to say who the greatest woman tennis player of all-time is. There are many great female tennis players in the world. It is tough to battle against Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova and Zina Garrison. However; there is one woman who has the potential to compete against these great players and that is Maria Sharapova.
Not many tennis fans would have predicted that Sharapova will claim her first Grand Slam when she was just 17-years-old, although in her merely seventh Grand Slam participation, she obtained the Wimbledon title and in a great way.
Throughout that Grand Slam she merely fell back; one in the quarterfinals against Ai Sugiyama and in the semifinals against Lindsay Davenport. However; she scarcely defeated Davenport 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 but she kept her best tennis for the final against Serena Williams. Sharapova knocked down the experienced opponent Serena Williams 6-1 6-4.
Ever since Sharapova’s great performance in the WTA she has captured 18 tour titles, three of them are Grand Slam Cups. One of them was in Wimbledon, the one just mention, the other one was in the 2006 US Open where she had a victory over Justin Henin. Then at the start of this year she defeated Ana Ivanovic in the Australian Open.
That is to say there is no disagreement there are more Grand Slam accomplishments to come for the Russian tennis player. Sharapova has not capture the French Open yet, but it doesn’t mean she hasn’t been triumphant in Paris. She has been in five French Open in which she has advanced to the quarterfinals or beyond three different times. It’s evident that Sharapova has what is needed to control every surface and even though she has dropped short on clay in the past, her future is enormous and very, very bright.
This 2008 season Maria Sharapova has obtained 2 titles, one in Melbourne and the other in Doha, but the greatest thing is the winning streak that she has built up. Despite her recent loss to her country woman Kutnezova in the semifinals at Indian Well, she accumulated an 18-0 winning record.
Sharapova has worked her way into the history books becoming the first ever Russian to be ranked number one in the world; Sharapova held on to that ranking for 14 weeks. Her record do not seems the best one but we have to remember that she is only 20-years-old and has already been the WTA number one.
Maria Sharapova has won already more than $11 million in tournaments prize money. More than that, she embraces a 287-66 winning record in tour matches. With her powerful ground strokes, her booming serve and her ability to never give in, there is no way to tell how far she could get. She surely has what is needed to exceed Davenport record of 55 career singles titles.
She can be really young, but she is an incredible champion today! Certainly; she can become one of the greatest female tennis players of all times and with many years to come, Sharapova’s era is far to be over.
