Golden League Jackpot already has an owner
By Julie Smith
The Golden League Jackpot was shared by the well-known Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, and the 400 flat meter specialist Sanya Richards from USA. This is not the first Jackpot for Richards who last year took $250,000. Richards also reached the best world time registered for this year with 49.27 seconds. Besides improving her time from Brussels, Sanya she also enjoyed to win for more than a second over her closer contender, the British Christine Ohuruogu, who took the glory at Osaka last month.
In the other hand, Isinbayeva left Berlin with a $500,000 price but unable to break her own world record of 5.02 meters. Her vaults where 4.62, 4.77 and 4.82 respectively; it was enough for her to assure her 15 win of the season. Isinbayeva has not lost a pole vault final since the Stockholm DN Galan meeting last 25 July 2006, where she came second to Poland’s Monika Pyrek.
As usual, the 25 year old Russian was faultless in Berlin and it helped her to finish undefeated. However, seems like we will have to wait another season to see her breaking her own mark imposed in the 2005 world championships in Helsinki.
The jackpot goes to athletes who win their events at all six Golden League meets. Yelena as well as Sanya deserved the price for their unbeatable season. The Russian will use some of the 500,000 dollars to help kinds back in her country, while the North American is willing to use the money for investment.
