Spaniard Wins Scandalous Tour de France
By Ally White
This Tour of France was very much polluted by drug scandals and persecutions, for me it took most of the real emotion and brought sensationalism and scandal to the Tour that does not go hand in hand with the sporting spirit.
Alberto Contador won the Tour de France when managed to hold on to his 23 second lead over Cadel Evans from Australia, to safely keep the magical yellow jersey in only his second ride after a fifth place finish in the state before time trial in Angouleme. He finished 2 minutes and 18 seconds behind Levi Leipheimer, his American teammate, but this forced him to work hard to avoid Evans from getting ahead.
Alberto Contador, a 24 year old Spaniard who lives in Madrid rides for the Discovery Channel Team and with this cup he becomes the first Spaniard to win the Tour de France race since Miguel Indurain who was also the first ever to win five consecutive times from 1991 to 1995.
Cadel Evans, becomes the highest finisher in the history of Australian racers, having equaled, Phil Anderson, another Australian that finished on the fifth place last year. Evans started the 19th stage with a deficit of 1 minute and 50 seconds on Contador, but he followed him closely, Contador had to really fight to keep the yellow shirt.
The 23 second margin is the smallest margin in the history of the Tour de France, the first one was when Greg Lemond finished second place after Laurent Fignon by only 8 seconds in a final day time trial in Paris in 1989.
