Street-Cycle-World Championship in Stuttgart

By Emeli Dean

After 16 years the Street-World Championship comes back to Stuttgart, one of the nicest Cycle Metro poles. Yesterday, Wednesday, September 26th, the Cycle-World Championship started in Stuttgart. This is probably the most important cycling world championship after many years.

This World Championship was supposed to be presented as a new era after uncountable doping exposures. The organizers created a catalog of preventive measures which contains for example a clause that says the former cyclists with a doping past will not receive a VIP-accreditation. Besides, every cyclist is obligated to sign a so called honored agreement, in order to participate.

Erik Zabel for example is entitled to participate in the course but apart from that he is not welcome in the World Championship Area.

The 37 years old it’s according to the number of his professional victories, until today Germany’s most successful professional cyclist. In May this year he admitted at a press conference that he was taking drugs at the Tour de France in 1996. He had to give back his green jersey from 1996, but hasn’t been punished because the offense already came under the statute of limitations.

For the participation of Erik Zabel there was a voting by the German Cycling Federation (BDR) which turned out positive for him with 6:2 votes. Formation vice president, Dieter Kühnle, was not satisfied with this decision and notified his opposition.

Also in the middle of a doping conflict are the Italian Bettini and the Giro winner Di Luca, against whom Italy is already investigating. Bettini was the only one who refused to sign the honored agreement and for the host city this is a reason to deny him the participation.

The Swiss title holder Fabian Cancellara won at the time trial on the 44.9 km long course with 55:41 minutes. The German Champion, Bert Grabsch, reached with a 15 second distance the fourth place, followed by his college Sebastian Lang. The 26 years old Grabsch had to struggle against the bad weather conditions in contrast to Cancellara who started one hour later.
However, both of them are really satisfied with their positions. For Sebastian Lang it was the first big race after a long pause, caused by a bad injury.
