Bettini is Champion of the UCI Road World Championship 2007
By Emeli Dean
Paolo Bettini is the Road World Champion for second time in a row. The 26 years old German, Stefan Schumacher, from team Gerolsteiner achieved the third place and repeated his World Cup victory from last year in Salzburg. Six kilometers before the finish the Bettini and Schumacher plus other three riders pulled clear and the Italian could come out on top with a time of 6:44:43 hours.
The German Champion Fabian Wegmann ranked nine, after he and another twelve riders caught up with the -by then leading- Davide Rebellin and Duo Kolobnew. Erik Zabel who ranked second last year, reached the finish line with the peloton with 49 seconds after Bettini and achieved the 18th place.
Despite there were a lot of discussions in the past days, thousands of spectators came to see the competition and to cheer for the 198 cyclists from 26 countries. The Road Championship is next to the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia one of the major cycle events. BDR, UCI and the city Stuttgart had just one aim all together: cycling!
For the organizers it was probably not such a nice experience. It was supposed to take centre stage after the embarrassing incidents of doping at the Tour de France. “We want a new beginning and grant therefore an ample control program” said Rudolf Sharping.
At a beginning Bettini was still not assured, because he was accused of being a possible supplier of dope to Patrik Sinkewitz, who confessed and was released from the T-Mobile team, so reported the German channel ZDF. According to a record noticed Sinkewitz said: “I had Italian suppliers who provided me with Testogel. I can also mention the names, Bramati and Bettini”.
Until the end the organizers tried to avoid Bettini’s participation, but a court order made it possible for him to join the UCI Road World Championship. His involvement was not only a judicial question but also a question of authenticity of cycling, so Lord Mayor Wolfgang Schuster.
