The Pro Tour Season reached its end last Saturday with the Tour of Lombardy, a tough route of 242 kilometers from Varese to Como. The race was decided 6 km from the finish on the last climb were Cunego and Ricco attacked several times to open a seven second lead. In the final line, Cunego from the Lampre squad beat his compatriot to earn his second Lombardy title.
Rebellin and Schleck also started the competition as favorites since they are great climbers. However, Schleck of Luxemburg ended in a fourth place after suffering an accident few kilometers to arrive to the finish line while Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) reached the 5th place just 10 seconds behind the first place. Spaniard Samuel Sanchez was the surprise of the day when getting the third place.
On the other hand, Cadel Evans from the Predictor Lotto started the competition as a clear favorite to win the Pro Tour season after the disqualification of Di Luca (Liquigas); the Italian was suspended by his country’s Olympic Committee due to his links with Italian doctor Carlo Santuccione who is currently under investigation for a doping case.
The pro- rides will take a little break before competing again, the next Pro Tour date will be on January 22nd at the Tour Down Under; an important cycling race held in South Australia that opens the season to attract famous cyclist from around the world.
