22 Teams to Take Part in 2007 Giro D’ Italia

By Julie Smith

Parting on May 12 with a 24 km time trial the 90th edition of the Giro the Italia will be a race for climbers with about six stages of mountain including famous climbs as the Zoncolan, the Dolomites and of course the Alps. With no doubt the Giro is one of the world’s greatest stage races and no one wants to miss it.

Besides the eighteen teams from the UCI Pro Tour, only four of many teams listed were selected to be at the start line in Caprera a small island of the coast of Sardinnia on May 12th, those were the Acqua Sapone, Tinkoff, Astana and the Irish team Panaria.

Remaining of the competition other renamed teams as Unibet.com, the LPR, the Flamina and Selle Italia usually invited to the race. They all will have to wait until next year and start adding points to its profile to be favorites next year.

The 22 selected for the organizers are: Gerolsteiner from Germany, The French teams Ag2R, Bouygues, Francaise, Cofidis y Credit Agricole; From United States the popular Discovery Channel; Spanish Euskaltel Euskadi, Caisse D'Espargne and Saunier Duval; Belgiums Predictor Lotto and Quick Step; Rabobank (HOL); CSC (DIN) y the Italians Lampre, Milram, Liquigas, Acqua & Sapone y Tinkoff; Panaria (IRL), Astana (SUI) and T. Mobile (ALE).

Great teams come with big stars, if Basso wants to hold the title he will have to beat previous winners such as Gilberto Simoni, Paolo Salvodelli, Damiano Cunego and Stefano Garzelli. Also, the american rider Tyler Hamilton who is coming back from two years suspension for resulting positive in a doping test is coming back to redeem himself.

Organizers of the Giro 2007 are announcing a “more human race” with something for everybody, sprinters and climbers alike. The 90th edition appears to be less demanding than 2006 edition, noted for its non stop climbing format. However, the three-week race will climb up the spine of the country and sprinters who shined during the first week will probably suffer a little more than climbers to get to Milan on June 3rd with 3442 kilometers on them legs.
