Cycling team Astana announces its return for Plouay

By: Jane Richy

The Swiss based team Astana might come back to race next September 2nd for the Plouay Grand Prix.

Some of the team’s members came out positive in doping tests this year, Andrej Kasheckin for blood transfusion and Matthias Kessler with testosterone and during the last Tour de France in July; cyclist Alexander Vinokourov, winner of the time trail stage came out positive for blood transfusions as well. After the incident with Vinokourov the entire team left the Tour and spent a month out of the competitions due to the uproar created by the outcomes.

Astana team could not take part of last year’s Tour de France as of a similar case regarding doping, they were involved in the “Port Operation”, doping investigation done in Spain in 2006.

The team had planned to be back on September 1st for the Vuelta a España 2007 Edition but the event’s organizers cancelled the invitation due to the last three cases of doping in the team.

The team had green light to participate for the next Grand Prix in Plouay for the Pro Tour and quitting is not in their future plans, the team’s leaders said to the press that together with the Swiss Olympic Committee are working in a regulation for an external and independent supervision against doping.
