Vuelta a España 2007
By: Jane Richy
Next September 1st will star this year’s Vuelta a España, without many known stars as quite a few have been expelled from cycling after the exhaustive anti doping controls taken in the Tour de France.
Between the great characters excluded we can name last year’s winner of the event Alexander Vinokourov from Astana, Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso, Floyd Landis and Michael Rasmussen, all of them tested positive in doping results. The current winner of the Tour de France - Alberto Contador won’t be in this race either due to an injury and is still enjoying his last victory.
The Spanish Jose Luis Arrieta from AG2R will have the number one in the Vuelta a España that starts September 1st from Vigo, in the North of Spain, and will finish September 23rd in Madrid.
The lack of “stars” in this event will be an opportunity for new cyclist to shine, similar to what happened with Contador in the Tour of France. Some of the new names expected to be heard in the next races are the Spanish Oscar Pereiro from Caisse d’Epargne, the Russian Denis Menchov from Rabobank who won this event in 2005, the Australian Cadel Evans from Predictor – Lotto second in the Tour in 2006 and the Italian Damianco Cunego from Lampre winner of the Giro de Italia in 2005. From Latin America there are two Colombians Leonardo Duque from Cofidis and Mauricio Alberto Ardilla Cano from Rabonbank.
