Alonso Says Good-Bye to McLaren
By Stephen Lars
The adventure of the two-time World Champion Spaniard Fernando Alonso in the British motor-racing team McLaren-Mercedes has ended "in the most convenient form", according to both parties bitterly and before due time.
The pilot and the team directed by Ron Dennis came to a mutual agreement to conclude the contract, which had been extended to the next season and with an option for the year 2009, without the compromise to pay a financial compensation.
According the Alonso's representative, Luis García Abbot, the covenant was the results of three days of intense negotiations at the teams headquarter in England.
The two times champion who won four Grand Prix and who finished third in latest championship will be linked with another team when the details of the agreement conclude.
"Since I was a boy always I wanted to drive for McLaren, but some times in the life things do not deliver", said Alonso in an official statement delivered to the press by the team.
The Oviedo's driver wanted to initiate his holiday season dissociated from the team and after a stormy season in which won the championship was obtained by the Finnish Kimi Raikkonen from Ferrari, who was also a previous driver of McLaren for five years.
Ron Dennis, the director and co-owner of the English team indicated that everyone in the motor-racing team and especially the Spanish sponsors: Banco Santander and Mutualidad Madrileña, ''they desire Fernando the best in his future".
Alonso's future is uncertain although several motor-racing teams such as: Renault, team which achieved several titles, Toyota, Williams and Red Bull, have announced their desire to hire to Alonso in the few week’s time.
Alonso wants to take the decision calmly and one step at a time as there is also the possibility for him to take one year off if none of the teams offers him the guarantees required by a pilot of his level. Alonso, who conquered his two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, had a very quarreled season and a difficult relation with his talented teammate Hamilton, the team director's protégé.
As an experienced pilot and world champion, Alonso expected a privileged deal in the squad, but the McLaren politics do provide the same deals to all the pilots.
Rookie Lewis Hamilton, a true surprise to most followers as well as other drivers thanks to his excellent performance made the balance changed against the Spaniard driver in the middle of season, as he overcame Alonso from the tournament leadership. Alonso was seen tense and under a lot of pressure, made mistakes that cost him the possibility of a third consecutive title. Along with the inside problems in the team itself and the espionage scandal that involved to the McLaren chief design that concluded with the championship of builders' condemnation.
