Heikki Kovalainen Wins the Hungarian GP
By Stephen Lars
Last Sunday the McLaren-Mercedes Fin driver Heikki Kovalainen achieved his first victory of his career at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which was the eleventh race of the Formula One world championship at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest.
Kovalainen bettered the timing and speed of the German Timo Glock (Toyota) by obtaining the best result of his career and his first podium while his countryman Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) arrived in third position.
Meantime, the Briton Lewis Hamilton still remains as the formula one leader with 62 points, five points more than Raikkonen and eight points above the Brazilian Felipe Massa.
After the first quick round Kovalainen took advantage of Massa’s mechanical bad luck during the first three laps of the competition. "I feel a little bad for Felipe. I know how he should feel, I have lived moments like that many times this season, but I am very happy for this first victory as it has always been one of my objectives", mentioned the Fin pilot.
On the other hand, Massa stated that this was not a very a pleasant moment as he gave his one hundred percent to obtain the victory and at the end outside effects prevented him to grasp the triumph.
The Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Renault) remained near the podium with a fourth place, obtaining his best result of the season. The Brazilian Nelsinho Piquet (Renault) confirmed their good shape with the sixth position, while the Italian Jarno Trulli (Toyota), remained seventh, and the Polish Robert Kubica (BMW Sauber), eighth, completed in this way the distribution of the points.
At the beginning Massa who was third in the grid had a perfect advancement prior to Kovalainen and Hamilton and placed himself in heading position in the first curve. Unfortunately for him he was not able to keep it for the remaining of the race.
In the first laps, the Ferrari drivers showed that there is not a lot to envy to McLaren-Mercedes, as their efficiency remains tops. The ‘La Scuderia’ drivers achieved better returns, although Hamilton was always closely behind in distance.
In the first pits stop the small group of drivers did not take a long time neither change a lot of equipment. Meantime, Kubica who was fifth to start the race lost enough distance. In the rear part, the French Sébastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso) and the Brazilian Rubens Barrichello (Honda) required the firemen with small fires in during their stops.
The first one great moment of the race was during the 40th lap when Hamilton crashed the left front wheel, which made him to slow down almost a whole lap before entering to change the tire. The Briton lost any hope of victory and at the end arrived in tenth position but managed to enter in the classification points.
Another emotional moment during the competition was for the F1 driver Glock who arrived in second place at the Hungagoring, who only two weeks previous was involved in a very serious accident in Hockenheim, Germany, which made him, spent the night in a nearby hospital. Nevertheless, his achievement compensated for the dark moments he lived a while back.
