F1: Jenson Button continues to lead the World Championship
By Stephen Lars
Once again, the British Jenson Button manages to prevail in the Formula One World Championship. On this occasion he was crowned champion in the Montmeló Circuit at the Grand Prix of Spain, fifth challenge of the present season, and with this triumph Button adds four victories, a factor that definitively reinforces his position in the first place of the drivers general standings.
This triumph has been a great challenge for the main driver of Brawn GP team, since he considers it as one of the circuits with the greater complexity, in where is necessary to maintain a high level of concentration in addition to the use of the most varied strategies to be able to advance effectively. For Button, surpassing this competition is something that excites him and fills him with a great satisfaction, which gives him the necessary confidence to remain firm for the rest of the season.
The suitable modifications along with the right guessed strategies used by Brawn GP, have been the main aspects that have helped Button to forget the bad moments he went through in previous seasons, excelling himself in an excellent way and prevailing with a great advantage over the other drivers and teams, to which he has managed to cause a great impression, not only by his good performance in the tracks, but also by the enormous progress that he is showing since his exit of the Honda team, when he fell into a crisis with the uncertainty of being without a team suddenly and not knowing what would happen to his career. It was then when the Brawn team was created and put their trust on Button, deciding to make the most of Button’s potential, even though it had not shown completely before.
Under the command of Ross Brawn, director of the team, Jenson Button is managing to elevate his level of competition, which has been demonstrated in each one of his present victories. So was the case of the race in Spain, competition in which he obtained the pole position. At the beginning of this challenge, Button accelerated thoroughly moving away of his pursuers, but he was quickly reached by his teammate, Rubens Barrichello, who placed himself at the top and stayed in this position throughout 19 laps until he entered to the pits area, being surpassed by Felipe Massa, who was at the head only during one lap, until Barrichello returned to the track and took the control again.
Before this Button lost positions, reason why those of Brawn team informed Barrichello that he needed to apply the strategy of entering to the pits area in three occasions, whereas Button would do it only twice. Therefore, after the Brazilian led the competition from the lap 21 to the 31, he went to refuel and this was the opportunity that his teammate took advantage of to be placed at the front and to lead the race during the following 16 laps. Then, knowing that he had obtained a very good advantage over Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel, who were his nearer pursuers at the moment, Button took the chance to make his two required entrances to the pits area and return to the track without losing his position.
In the middle of these two stops that Button made, Barrichello went ahead again and leaded the race during two laps, but then he was forced to make his third re-fuelling, which cost him to lose the great position he had when once again the Briton took advantage and went ahead to take the disputed position from the lap 51 until arriving at the end of the 66 scheduled laps, thus to take possession of the checkered flag that closed an event where Button raised to the top of the podium once more, with Rubens Barrichello in the second position, whereas Red Bull’s Mark Webber finished third.
