2007 Australian Grand Prix Formula 1 First Round

By Julie Smith

The 2007 Formula One World Championship will have its opening round next Sunday in the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne; a 16 turn-circuit constructed from a combination of roads within the park will be the first tester for the engines. Big names as Fernando Alonso, Giancarlo Fisichella and Kimi Raikonen will appear on the scene.

Fernando Alonso as the title holder seems to be the favorite to win; he moved from the champions Renault to success starved McLaren (which has the best record in Australia since 1985); in which he’s feeling very confident.

Of course, we can’t talk about Formula One without mentioning the Ferrari team; this year they appear with an amazing duo of potential world champions like Massa and Kimi Raikonen, both of them extremely experienced pilots who will battle against the Spaniard for the Australian’s Podium.

Renault’s squad is as well a giant within Formula One; they have won the title for the past two years, however, this new season they are coming in with a rookie driver in its line-up that is Heikki Kovalainen but with a back up like veteran Fisichella, who have already achieved a podium in Melbourne and is aware of the fact that this is his chance for shinning in Renault since Fernando Alonso’s departure.

But the first race is always different; anything can occur in Australia and especially in a circuit like that, it can be extremely bumpy and dusty. It does not only concern car and driver performance, it’s also about luck.
