Fisher Missed Out on the Best

By: Cindy Ferguson

Due to his unfortunate loss against Frenchman Thomas Levet in the playoffs, Oliver Fisher missed out on a historical European Tour where his win would have been a spectacular career highlight.

The 19-year-old British lad was three ahead with just six left and was on his way to become the fifth youngest player in history to win the European Tour; however, Levet ripped that privilege away from him. Only one teenager has managed to capture the title and that was Paul Way during the Dutch Open in 1982.

Fisher is referred to as one of the most excellent prospects in current years. He was the champion of the Faldo Series, Nick Faldo's development program for young golfers, in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2005 he became the youngest player to take part in the Walker Cup. Towards the end of 2006 he participated in the European Tour Qualifying School as an amateur and finished fifth to become the youngest Briton to win a tour card and instantaneously became professional.

He made the cut at his first five European Tour event as a professional and finished high enough on the 2007 Order of Merit to retain his card for 2008.

Even though he did not make history happen he still bogeyed the 13th and 14th but then ran into the water off the tee on the 18th and hit a bogey five on the extra hole. Those and a few other stumps gave Levet an advantage and he was the man to take advantage and seal his win.

This is Fisher’s second full season as a professional and is presently ranked 290th in the world and stated he would have loved to win but he is sure he will be awarded other opportunities to prove his skills.

Chris Jenkins has been Fisher’s coach ever since he was nine years old and is exceptionally delighted and fulfilled with the work the two have accomplished and deeply feels there is not much more Fisher can do to improve swing but both realize he needs to be more consistent. Another area where he works hard at is at the gym in order to remain physically strong.

Levet made it clear that his victory was not easy task and stated he has never finished a tournament that way as apparently Fisher gave him a very, very hard time. In fact, he compared Fisher to some of the world’s best such as: Nick Faldo and even Tiger Woods. He feels the youngster needs to practice a little more and work on his Tour and just a few years he will be in the top spot.

This was Levet’s first in four years and won a grand total of nearly £130,000 and concluded his return from a very awful period in 2006 and beginning of 2007 when he dreaded a severe spell of unsteadiness that could have ended his career. Many await Fisher’s next appearance which is the Wales Open that will take place in June.
