Self Defense or Martial Art
By PWT
You frequently hear of someone saying I am learning a martial art or a self defense. Are they the same thing or is a martial art more than just a form of self defense? Styles like Aikido, Jujitsu, Karate and Kung Fu are obviously good at defending yourself but was that all the founders had in mind.
Self defense is by definition the means of defending yourself from a violent attack. This does not cover all Martial Arts as you do not have to be a martial artist to defend yourself.
Whereas Martial Art is the Art of being Martial and Martial means military or warlike. Therefore it is the art of battle and this includes attacks and defenses designed for times of conflict.
Let’s look at some examples. Modern Judo would be no good to train soldiers in (other than strangles) because the martial components such as punching, kicking and striking have been removed for the safety of participants. Modern Sumo is the same. Both have come from a martial art and been adapted in modern times to be a sport.
Aikido is another example. It was adapted from Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu (hand to hand combat used by the samurai) into a pacifist style designed to cause minimum injury to an opponent. It was not designed for soldiers to go into battle.
In modern society most people train in a system of self defense. We are not going to war and society requires we do minimum damage to our opponent even when we are attacked.
In summing up all martial arts are a form of self defense and thankfully few self defenses are a true martial art.
