Nordic combined, an interesting sport

By Jill Woods

The Nordic combined has been practiced in Norway for many years, and is a sport that involves ski jumping and cross-country skiing; both demand physical strength, technical control and endurance.

Nordic combined was introduced as individual events in 1924, at the first Olympic Winter Games held in Chamonix – Mont Blanc.

This sport is composed by three events which consist of a ski jumping competition and a cross-country skiing race. In the Individual Gundersen event the ski jumping takes place in a 90 meters hill and the cross-country part is a 15km race. For the team and the spring events it’s normally developed in a 120 meters hill and the cross-country has a 7.5 km race in the spring event and 4x5km relay in the team event.

To give a better explanation about those three events, following a short review about them:

Individual Gundersen:

In this event each participant takes two jumps on the 90 meters hill, each jump is scored for length and style. After the jumps they have to be part of a 15km cross-country race, the start order depends of the jumps results: the first place in ski jumping; will be the first in the second part of the competition. The points from the ski jumping part are converted into time differences for the starting order of the cross-country race.

Sprint:

For this event, in the ski jumping competition, the participants will have to perform just one jump in a 120 meters hill and will have to make a race of 7.5 km in the cross-country stage and the order for the second part determined by the results on the first one. The points from the ski jumping part are converted into time differences for the starting order of the cross-country race.

Team:

The event includes teams formed by 4 jumpers, which make two jumps from the normal hill (120 meters). The team score is the total of the eight jumps. The competitors will have to compete in a 4x5 km relay. The winner team is whose final skier crosses the line first.
