2010 Winter Olympics in Canada

By Claudia Beckford

The beautiful country of Canada has been selected as the next host for the Winter Olympics which will take place in Vancouver. Over the past months, the committee organizers have had the task to look for as many sponsors as possible and so far they have managed to sign agreements with 28 firms for a total of 691 million dollars basically a ninety percent of the desired budget.

There are other important aspects surrounding the next Winter Olympics; one of is the venues to be used for the competitions and well as for the athletes training. Canadian construction workers have been able to finish on time and within budget all three Whistler Olympic and Paralympic facilities; which are: the Whistler Sliding Centre, Whistler Olympic Park and Whistler Creekside, these facilities will host 46 Olympic medal events and 62 Paralympic medal events. Basically, this has been achieved two years prior to the event.

In order to complete such labour there was needed a work force of 2,500 men and women who were recruited from British Columbia and across Canada. Among some of the event’s sponsors that help out with the construction (equipment and materials) include: General Electric, General Motors of Canada, Petro-Canada, RONA, Dow Canada and EPCOR

"Every construction worker and member of our venue team put their hearts into this project and is standing atop their own podium today, their efforts are helping us to meet our commitment to deliver spectacular theatres for sport and lasting community legacies, and we are following through on our promise to offer athletes the chance to train and compete at a world-class level more than two years in advance of the Games." said John Furlong, VANOC Chief Executive Officer.

The most awaited seventeen-day competition has taken the organizing committee five years of planning besides six major revisions and more than 50 drafts to come up with the event scheduling plan which governs 86 events in 15 disciplines at nine different venues.

The Olympics will take place in the new and already established facilities in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12th to 28th, and these will provide the best conditions for athletes to compete as well as for the spectators to enjoy all competitions. Meantime, the Paralympic Winter Games will take place in the cities of Richmond, Vancouver, Whistler and the District of West Vancouver from March 12th to 21st.
