By Emeli Dean
Last weekend in the two games of the semi-finals, the teams from England and South Africa could prevail against their opponents France and Argentina. The title holder; England, won with 14:9 and achieved the entry in the finals for the third time after 1991 and 2003. For South Africa, the Champion in 1995, this time will be the second participation for a World Cup Final which they could seal with a 37:13 victory.
South Africa won for the twelve’s time in twelve games against Argentina. Both teams reached the semi-finals without a loss but the South African team was clearly superior from the beginning.
On the other hand, England, had to fight for their victory against the host team France until the end.
The French team with Coach Bernard Laporte still led the game five minutes before the end with one point but couldn’t retain the advantage. The 28-year-old Englishman Wilkinson could score the crucial points in the last minute and lead his team through a penalty kick and a dropkick to the finals. This was the 90th clash of the two teams.
For next Sunday’s final on October 20th, England is the first team in the World Cup History with a chance to defend the World Champion Title. South Africa still continues to be the favorite in this World Cup. Argentina and France will come together on Friday, October 19th in Paris to play for the third place.
