Snooker 2007 World Championship-First Round Knock Out

By Julie Smith

First round of the Snooker World Championship ensured that a first time winner has never come back to hold the title, the defending champion Graemme had a terrible start with a 10-7 defeat against Preston’s Ian McCulloch.

The Preston potter defeated Graeme Dott in 2005 and he didn’t have to go far to do the same against him, in the 2007 tournament the revenge was successful while the pressure of being the holder probably counted against Graemme.

Along with crushed hopes of defending the title, Dott’s chances of earning the official world No. 1 spot for the first time will probably blow off. If Ken Doherty beats Mark Allen in his opening encounter, he will move ahead of Dott on the provisional list.

Now, the scenery has changed, without Dott as a favorite; players like Anthony Hamilton appear on the scene; he made it 6-1 thanks to a 45 break in the final frame, making himself a clear favorite to progress to the next phase.

Moreover, John Parrott the 1991 World Champion had a good day as well and carried a 6-3 lead over six time winner Steve Davis into the final session of their first-round match; while Stevens eased to a 7-2 lead over Irish Joe Delaney who is making his debut at Crucible after having a great season.

Stevens has the potential to go through to the last 16 stage, however, he won just one match in 2007 and will have to improve significantly if he wants to make an impact this year. But now, all of them have the same chances, the tournament is very unpredictable and best prove of it is the knock out of the favorite when the action was just starting.
