2007 Tennis World Champions
By: Camilla Mancini
The prevailing couple of tennis players, Roger Federer and Justine Henin, both number one players in male and female categories, became officially the 2007 World Champions after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced it on Monday.
Both had an excellent year, in which they kept nourishing their careers through every tournament they played in. While Henin won the Australian Open and the US Open, Federer just missed the third Grand Slam, the Roland Garros, where he couldn’t defeat the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
This is the fourth time in a row that Federer, at his 26 years, gets the title of World Champion; while it is the third time for Henin, who also caught it last year and in 2003.
The Belgian, being just a year younger than the Swiss, owns 39 career titles and exceeds $19 million prize money. Tennis specialist talk a lot about her major skills and strategies, but in special of her one-handed backhand, which the own John McEnroe has called the best single-handed backhand in men’s and women’s game.
On the other side we got Roger, who had managed it to break some great records, for example he is the only male player that had reached the four finals of the Grand Slams in two consecutive years; plus he also shares the lead with Björn Borg for the record of five consecutive Wimbledon tournaments.
Federer is definitively the best of his generation and is considered by many _including me_ as having the potential to be the greatest tennis player of all-times. During this year was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, has won 12 Grand Slams, 4 Tennis Masters Cup titles, and 14 ATP Masters Series.
So, when I said at the beginning of this article that they were officially the 2007 ITF World Champions it is because everyone have known for months that the title was theirs.
For the 2008 there will be a lot of expectations from the public, especially around Roger Federer, since is possible that on this season he achieves his Career Grand Slam.
The first Grand Slam is the Australian Open, which will be starting on January 14th. So be aware of the championship, as for sure you’ll see some great performances from our female and male 2007 Tennis World Champions.
