Germany in the Davis-Cup Semifinals

By Emeli Dean

On the following weekend, from September 21st to September 23rd, the two Semifinal games of the Davis-Cup will take place. In Göteborg, the United States will meet the host Sweden, and in Moscow, Germany and cup holder Russia will fight for the entry in the Final Round.

The biggest tennis-arena of the world at the Olympic Stadium in Moscow can hold over 10.000 people. The field will be surfaced with sand this time.

In April Germany won the Quarterfinals against Belgium with 3:2 sets. For the German team this time will be the first time to reach the Davis-Cup Final Round after their third victory in 1993. Germany already entered in total five times into the Finals. The first time they were defeated by the United States was in 1970. In 1985 the German team lost against Sweden. Just three years later, they were able to show their strength against the same team and win in 1988 as well as in 1989. The last victory they achieved was against Australia in 1993.

This is the ninth Davis-Cup meeting between Russia and Germany. The German team just won four of them. The most embarrassing match was probably in 1995 when Michael Stich lost in the Semifinals, just after nine match balls against the Russian Andrej Tschesnokow. Russia was then playing against the United States who took the cup home.

It is the oldest challenge cup of the world and it was donated in 1900 from the young Harvard student Dwight Filley Davis. It was donated as a trophy on the occasions of the first comparison from the youth tennis players of the United States to the players from the UK. Dwight Filley Davis was one of the famous tennis players and later became the minister of defense of the United States. With his trophy, one of the largest sports series in time was found. For its 100th birthday in the 2000, there were 129 nations playing against each other.
