By Stephen Lars
In his first game at the Master Series in Shanghai; the Swiss Roger Federer was stunted by the Chilean Fernando González in three sets, for 3-6, 7-6 (7/1), 7-5, this past Monday.
For Federer this is the first time as the world's number one that he losses to González; basically the first time Federer loses a match in a group phase in the Masters during his sixth appearances.
''Federer was very motivated, very animated to leave to the field. But during five games he played as the world's number one, inclusive better. I was playing badly, but them he calmed himself and I raised my level of play. I didn't doubt in the important points of the game. I won a great game'', González was congratulated.
The Australian Lleyton Hewitt has only beaten Federer who was won the Series in 2003-2004 and 2006 during the 2002 semifinals and by the Argentinean David Nalbandial in the 2005 finals. Federer had won his previous fifteen games before the tournament.
This has not definitely been Federer’s best season. ''It's not easy to maintain the same rhythm that the previous years. It's true that I won less titles this year, but I defended my world's number one position and I have earned three Grand Slam tournaments, for which continues being a fantastic year. It can seem that I am more vulnerable, but I want to show this week and next year that is not true'', affirmed Federer.
To reach the semifinals this year in the Masters, Roger Federer needs to win his two next games, on Wednesday against the Russian Nikolay Davydenko and on Friday against the American Andy Roddick.
Federer’s record against Davydenko is to his favorite as well as his numbers against Roddick with an overwhelming 14-1,
The Chilean, seventh ranked in the world did a fantastic job from the end of the first set. ''Defeating the world's number one is something very pleasant. Was my shift. That Federer loss shows they are human being and that is not possible to win all the time. It took me more than two hours and some luck to break him. Now all is possible, but two very difficult games remain'', added González.
Fernando González did play well and he deserved the win. The world has placed him as the player with the best forehand and extremely systematic. Even the Swiss admitted that his enormous right blow did impress him as well as his regularity” said Federer.
