Sharapova to debut on Fed Cup World Group

By Julie Smith

As she mentioned last year, the professional player Maria Sharapova will join the most important tennis tournament for female national teams to help the Russian team. The world ranked number 2 will lead a potential winners group for the Fed Cup, conformed by Elena Dementieva Nadia Petrova and Svetlana Kuznetsova as well as herself, all of them top 10 ranked.

There is no doubt that the tennis player will be the central event of the entire tournament, she began the year 2007 by reaching the final of the Watson Water Champions Challenge and made it to the Australian Open Final where she defeated Serena Williams one of the best player of the world.

For the Russian, Fed Cup is not only an opportunity to play with her country in a high recognized tournament; it is also a chance to be part of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Sharapova’s strongest opponent Serena Williams also looks forward to the event.

The 19 years-old lady is really excited to face her first Fed Cup as part of the Russian Team; playing at home will make a very good environment for Sharapova and her teammates fact that make the Spanish representatives think twice about what is approaching.

Spaniards were five times Fed Cup winners but they haven’t won the title since 1990, however, their country has been a very consistent performer with four semifinal finishes in the last five years.

First round of the competition will be played on April 21st and 22nd just a couple days after Sharapova’s 20th birth date. The only presence of the highest-paid female athlete on the planet gives the Fed Cup an extra importance.
