Youzhny Slammed Nadal in the Chennai Open
By: Cindy Ferguson
The world’s number two, Rafael Nadal, got hammered in the Chennai Open final by the world’s number nineteen Russian, Mikhail Chennai.
Nadal’s downfall started after he spent four hours battling against Carlos Moya in the semi final. The Spaniard was even forced to call for medical attention due to physical worn out and a slight injury during Saturday’s game where he was involved in the longest three set match in the ATP Tour in fifteen years (3 hours and 54 minutes).
Although; the 21-year-old did not win the match he feels he is off to a good a start in this year’s campaign and that this competition was of good practice for him and strongly agrees Mikhail indeed deserved to win. Nadal is now on his way to Melbourne where he will practice hard for about a week and then be on his way to the Australian Open hoping to win another Grand Slam title.
World’s number 19 did play in fact incredible tennis and closed out the match in only fifty eight minutes on the court with his tough but tired opponent. This is Youzhny’s fourth title throughout his career and admitted that his win was due to Nadal’s physical state and saw it as a gift from him. However, he thought the task would be much harder than it actually it was.
Youzhny was sure Rafael would make a strong come back during the second set but he didn’t and Mikhail took advantage and slammed him in the fourth game trying his hardest to stay focused and not make mistakes.
Mikhail managed to defeat Nadal in four of their seven encounters played on hard courts. As you can see; he is very happy with the outcome of the tournament and knows he has improved. He will now keep practicing for the upcoming tennis tournaments especially the Australian Open where he will play against the world’s best players..
