More Surprises for the 2008 Season
By Ally White
The first Gran Slam event of 2008 could be a precise pointer of what the year could bring along. There are some developments that can come forward from the Australian Open, and how this may silhouette the tennis tournaments of the subsequently 11 months ahead.
None of last year’s favourites and champs Justine Henin and Roger Federer made it to the final. People intuition is that in spite of the imposing way those two players dominated 2007; the line up has been clean in a more remarkable demonstration of the randomness of today's competitions. There is no doubt the way the year began is seriously vital because it positions the players in different perspectives of what is next to come.
People are crazy to state Federer has shot his role as a foremost player, or that Henin is in crisis. However; the new champs (Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic ) are just 20-years-old, and Sharapova had already obtained two other crowns besides the Australian one.
One big part of the game is "offense” and if we evaluate the singles finals as well as some of the last competitors who had their chances like Rafael Nadal or Jelena Jankovic but did not seem eager to reach a major tournament; there will always be others who are willing to win them. There are also the two David's Ferrer and Nalbandian who will need to re-think their indisposition to arrive to the net.
What about the Williams Sisters? Serena and Venus have reduced the Williams "branding", but nevertheless during the Australian Open, it seems like Americans needed to reconsider their game. Already some of the WTA women players no longer perceive the Williams as supreme, and everybody knows that in tennis, perception is as vital as reality. These circumstances will aggravate, too, for the rest of the season and specially in the French Open as them both will play hard to obtain the Red Clay Grand Slam.
The globalization of the sport keeps going at a quick pace and new stars continue to rise from different nations not just Australia or U.S but Russia. Besides new champion Maria Sharapova there is Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva and Marat Safin. These players keep captivating and winning majors or appearing in finals. Let’s now forget the Israelis, Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram who won the Israel's first Grand Slam title in men's doubles.
This tennis season will be full of surprises and events that perhaps none of the fans, players, coaches or even the media is expecting.
